Copenhagen TV Festival and Copenhagen Film Fund are proud to present Pamela Adlon, creator, showrunner, director and actor behind Better Things.
Better Thingsis the successful comedy series about Pamela Adlon’s alter ego, Sam Fox, a middle-aged, single mother and working actress raising three daughters in Los Angeles. A character that you rarely see on television.
I wanted to see somebody like me. Women in my age are invisible. We could rob a bank and nobody would notice. Nothing sexy about a smelling, Jewish lady. But I made it cool again.
With the rise of new streaming platforms and an increasing demand of tv-series we have seen a wider range of female main characters portrayed in tv-series these years. And also a rise of tv-series with women creators both in front and behind the camera, like for example Better Things, Insecure and SMILF.
Meet Pamela Adlon and hear her thoughts about creating this autobiographical character based on her own life. This three-hour masterclass takes a closer look at how she works, what inspires her and how she manages to balance being both the actor, writer, director, producer and showrunner of this highly successful tv-series.
After decades as a working actor jumping from short-lived sitcoms, pilots, voiceover gigs to smallish movie roles Pamela Adlon was not starved for roles. But like Sam Fox, the character in Better Things, casting directors were not chasing after her, either. Adlon’s carrier took a turn when she started her professional relationship with Louis C.K. and co-wrote seven episodes of the comedy-series Louie before she landed her own series, FX’s Better Things. The two first seasons co-written with Louis C.K. The third season she wrote without Louis C. K and with a writer's room.
Better Thingsand Adlon's performance have been praised, and Adlon was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2017 and 2018.
