HOW TO MAKE A POWERFUL PORTRAIT OF A LIVING LEGEND
Meet the Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia who reinvented the documentary with first the acclaimed Senna and Amy and now Diego Maradona. Asif Kapadia’s third documentary just premiered in Cannes this spring, and tells the astonishing story about one of the most iconic footballers of all times.
But unlike his previous documentaries Asif Kapadia has this time made a portrait of one of the times biggest still living legends, Diego Maradona.
Asif Kapadia will share how he has worked with untangling the man from the myth and bringing Diego Maradona’s complicated life to screen. And how it this time has been to make a documentary with a still living character and to portrait a person who perhaps isn’t always the most reliable witness of their own story.
Asif Kapadia is originally film director and his documentaries are constructed like fiction. He will share how he in Diego Maradona - as well as his other masterpieces Amy and Senna - has worked to create the strong narrative and scenes based primarily on archive footage.
Diego Maradona is the concluding part of a trilogy about prodigies and fame. In his latest documentary, Asif Kapadia once again uses carefully selected found footage to show the decline of a beloved talent who was destroyed by his success. The documentary is a mosaic of archive footage, occasionally overlaid with the voices of key characters from the story including team-mates, coaches and girlfriends. The film is constructed out of 500 hours of never-before-seen footage taken from Maradona’s personal archive.
Diego Maradona will premiere in cinemas in Denmark the 5thof September 2019.
