Derek Cianfrance is a writer, director, and executive producer whose work explores familial and generational trauma, parenthood, and masculinity. His most recent project, I Know This Much Is True, is an HBO limited series starring Mark Ruffalo in a role for which he was nominate for an Emmy.
Derek's previous films include The Light Between Oceans—an adaptation of M.L Steadman’s New York Times best seller starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz, The Place Beyond The Pines—starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes, and Blue Valentine—starring Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling in roles for which Gosling was nominated for a Golden Globe and Williams was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar.
In addition to his films, Derek has been celebrated for his documentary work on subjects such as Mos Def, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, and Run-DMC as well as his high-profile commercial work, for which he was awarded the DGA's Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials in 2016. Derek lives in NYC with his wife, artist Shannon Plumb, and their two sons.
